A Gift That Keeps On Giving

If you are already married, you know all about that one cupboard in the kitchen or shelf in the pantry that holds the wedding fossils. Far from being unusual wedding gifts, I am talking about the wasteland of toasters, kettles, dishes and candlesticks that you received as wedding gifts in multiples and never, ever use.

You don’t have the heart to get rid of them and it may be too soon to re-gift them, so there they sit collecting dust and taking up space. So, then why would you inflict the same fate on a new couple and purchase them a useless, unimaginative gift that they will never use?

Unusual wedding gifts, that are bought and given with imagination and excitement, are available everywhere. You just need to know a little bit about the couple you are buying for and be brave enough to step outside the norm and choose a gift that has a little oomph! Perhaps a gift that keeps on giving for a full year will do the trick!

Gift of the month clubs are cropping up all across North America and come in all forms and functions. You can pay for a few months or a whole year and once you set up it and pay, it is done and effortless. Whatever you choose will be shipped to the newlywed couple’s home every month for as long as you purchased the gift.

It is generally customary to do a full year, 12 months, and if you choose something smaller, like chocolates, it can be as little as $200 for the whole year including delivery. If a gift of the month club sounds like something you would like to give as the perfect unusual wedding gift, here are a few ideas:

Wine of the month club – wrap up the gift certificate for the service around a bottle of wine or a set of nice wine glasses from the couple’s gift registry list. Or personalize a wine gift set with their names on the wood box, and tuck the gift club notification inside it.

Cigar of the Month – if the couple has a sense of humor, and enjoys cigars, put the gift notification inside a silver plated brass cigar tube and have the tube engraved with their names and wedding date on it. An unusual gift that also has keepsake value.

Fruit of the Month – For health nuts, fresh fruit every month is an awesome idea. Perhaps to wrap the gift, purchase a set of heart shaped fruit serving plates, arrange them in a picnic basket and include the gift notification inside the basket.

Monthly Chocolate – Yummy! Not only unusual, but this gift will be appreciated every single month it arrives. There are a million ways you could wrap up this monthly gift notification on the wedding day. Perhaps include the card inside a heart shaped fondue set or purchase a box of chocolates at the store, but empty it out and include only the gift notifications.

Candle of the Month – This would certainly be classified as unusual wedding gifts, and for the candle lover, a wonderful present. Each month, the couple would receive a new gift set of wonderful, high quality candles. In the first year of marriage, candles are big on the list of things to have in and around the bedroom and bathtub area!

To wrap this gift, include your notification in a nicely arranged gift box. Include things like scented votive candles, love set glass candle holders, a few romantic wedding luminaries, silk rose petals and some heart shaped wedding confetti. Could a wedding gift be more unusual, unexpected or perfectly romantic?

These are just a few of the monthly clubs available for gift giving. If you want to tread out to the outer fringe with unusual wedding gifts, there are also barbeque sauce club, tie of the month, cheesecake of the month, movie of the month, cheese of the month and salsa of the month. Just look around on the internet and search for the keywords “gift of the month” and you will find all kinds of wonderful and unusual wedding gift ideas.

If you can only afford a few months, that is perfectly fine – most clubs do require a minimum of 3 months. However, if you can manage it financially, a full year that keeps right on giving until the couple’s first wedding anniversary is really a wonderful gesture.

Just a tip but to make the gift extra special, have it delivered starting one month after their wedding, so that the delivery lands on their doorstop on the monthly anniversary of their wedding day – newlyweds tend to count anniversaries in months… at least for the first year of wedded bliss!
