Decorate Your Car As If It Would Get Married
If renting a luxury vehicle has no room in your wedding budget, you can always work with your own car. Do not worry if your car does not seem to fit the bill. With just a few simple (and practical!) embellishments, you will be able to make a grand statement. To arrive in style, dress up the car in a similar fashion as your ceremony and reception. Think coordinated decors and colors.
Here are some trimming ideas to achieve that cohesive look:
Flowers
- Incorporating the blooms of your bouquet, ask your florist to prepare a long arrangement that can be draped around the car. Or a centerpiece that may be laid flat on top of the hood.
- Have mini versions prepared as corsages for the door handles.
- Create round- or heart-shaped wreaths from the same flowers used to decorate the altar. These can be placed at the center of the car hood or trunk.
- String together store-bought silk flowers to form garlands. Tied to or tucked under the trunk, these are meant to dangle behind the car. If you prefer fresh blooms, go for those that are not too delicate and can therefore hold up well on a moving vehicle. Examples are roses and carnations. If money is a concern, make plastic or tissue paper pom-poms instead and then tie them together with twine.
Ribbons
Are you worried that purchasing additional flowers will strain your budget? Ribbons are an affordable yet chic alternative. You can mantle them around the car. Or affix them as large bows. Just remember:
- Sheer organza ribbons are perfect for very formal weddings. Nylon versions lend a more laidback feel.
- Colorwise, hot pink and other bold hues suit summer weddings. Cream ribbons are ideal for sophisticated celebrations.
Tulle netting
Something as clearly associated with weddings such as tulle netting can also do the trick.
- Line your car with white tulle and finish it off with flowers and silk ribbon.
- Go bold by placing a sheet of tulle on top of the vehicle, as if it was wearing a veil. Cap it off with a large-enough tiara.
Balloons & streamers
Tie balloons to the antenna and side mirrors, and streamers (of varying lengths) on the door handles or hubcaps.
Custom add-ons
One of the advantages of decorating your own car is that you can put your personal stamp on it. Here are some ways to do so:
- Attach fabric or tissue paper banners on the antenna or the side panels. The banners can be decorated with the names or intertwined initials of the bride and groom, plus the wedding date.
- If you had monograms specially designed for your invitation, incorporate these via window decals. Such static-cling add-ons can be removed easily without any mess or damage. They also work under any kind of weather.
- Want something more hands-on, literally? Use glass markers to doodle or scribble on the windows. To erase the markings, just wipe off with a damp cloth.
Just remember that the decorations should not obscure the driver’s view. There should be ample room to see in all directions so do not cover the windows and mirrors heavily.
In addition, use non-marking adhesive, suction cups or magnets (available from you local craft supply store) for embellishments that need to be affixed to the car. This way, you will be assured that its surface will not be damaged.
Decorating your wedding car may not be on the top of your to do list. But try to figure it in, as this is one of the elements that can make a great first impression and leave a lasting impact on your wedding day.
